Regarding files appearing as executables, you may try to change your
mount options in your fstab and look at parameters such as umask,
dmask and fmask. FYI, these are my parameters: 

vfat 
rw,user,noauto,iocharset=utf8,utf8,umask=111,dmask=002,fmask=113,uid=0,gid=100,quiet
 0 0
