Yesterday I helped with the Balsam Mtn CBC and surveyed around Lake Junaluska.
Early morning there were only three or four small open pools of water on the
lake where the waterfowl was concentrated. The rest of the lake was frozen
with the exception of where the two creeks enter. By day’s end, those few open
water areas had been reduced in size. Reports from other field groups
indicated that most ponds/lakes within the CBC circle were frozen. After
yesterday’s continued sub-freezing temperatures there may be even less open
water. Before you head to Haywood County to bird the lakes check to see if the
ice has melted.
