In the future, if you have a complaint for Duxbury, then please direct your
complaint to info@xxxxxxxxxx or to any of us here in the office.
In this case, DBT used to translate symbols in that manner because that was
the way that BANA stated it should be done for literary braille. I do
believe that the symbols were translated in a non-literary manner for
technical (mathematical) material and when using the TEXTBOOK template, as
contrasted with the STANDARD template.
I do believe this has been changed in current versions of DBT to take into
account the changes implemented by BANA.
At Duxbury, we have always aimed to implement translation tables in DBT WIN
so that the braille translation is that established by the Braille Authority
for that locality.
DBT has long had a code to address this specific concern.
[vrn~inf] establishes "informal mode," wherein certain ASCII characters that
are not defined in literary braille, and which according to the strict
interpretation of the BANA literary code must therefore be represented as
one or more words in braille (e.g. "greater-than" for ">"), are instead
given informal but generally familiar representations (e.g. dots 3-4-5 in
that case). Note that the definition of this code may be changed or
discontinued in future versions. Also note that the [vrn~] code may
different (or no) options for different language translation tables

I have been asked by a number opf people in my area to voice a serious
complaint with Duxbury concerning its changing symbols, such as
"greater-than" to words, to supposedly conform to literary braille.
This is truluy a nuisance, especially in material about HTML, but it crops
up in email and other places where it is truly annoying.
What is Duxbury Systems doing to deal with this problem? Note that with
Megadots one doesn 't have these problems.
