Hi,

Just a few ideas to optimize the laptop.

- As you already know, you need to be on top of the machine "brain"! Give it less work to do, and he will respond much better.

- And, you can elevate the laptop. So, more air underneith cools better!

- You can - also clean the laptop, i clean mine every 3 months.
Be aware that the dust makes all pieces inside, very hot!
Try to spray with air, the top keyboard plus the inside laptop.
It's advice to go to a teknician, if you dont know how to open the laptop or dont know how to do it.
Back home it's like 10 dolares. It's worthit!

Best regards,
Rui Vilarinho

I just gave another run on sonar. Had around 10 midi tracks with soft
synths from tts1 and did a quick instrumental, and my computer is
deffinately doing better. I did what all you guys mentioned and kept
messing with the buffer and asio drivers. I think my computer is
capable thus far, and as for the chipset: I think I'm clear on that
one. I don't have latency, or drop outs anymore, however my computer
is getting pretty heated. I guess the real test will be when I begin
to mess with effects and multiple plug ins.

Thanks for all the help and support, my latency issue is now fixed.

Ram will help, but if by processing power you mean CPU power, no. Also,
the
first thing to do here is not just change things to make it better, find
the
source of the problem first; like I wrote previously, the problem could be
one of a few things, a firewire chipset missmatch (if you're using a
firewire interface), problems with your laptop's chipset, too many
services
running, antivirus/malware programs running, CPU parking/power saving
features etc.

Hey DJX.

I actually am planning to run multiple synths with plug in effects, but I
wont test that out till next week. I need to look at the cake talking
tutorial for a lot of those functions, but I guess I'll have to try to
prepare this laptop for music production. My laptop has a slot for adding
4
gigs or ram. You think that will in hance the processing power? Just a
thought. Also freezing tracks should help me out though am I not right?

Thanks

Hey, glad to hear things are improving! When I asked about the chipset
however, I was speaking of the computer's motherboard chipset. Though
firewire chipset is also important if you're using a firewire interface.
You could probably get the motherboard chipset from looking up the
model specs, but remember some systems are customized a bit
differently, though if you bought this off the shelf it should be the
same major components, including the motherboard.

For firewire chipsets, if you have an audio interface that uses
firewire, best bet is to look at what chipsets the manufacturer does
and does not recommend. Texas instruments is for the most part the
universal choice, but some from Via work as well, and from what I've
heard, some people who got crappy performance with texas instruments
chipsets had great success with Via chipsets. Furthermore, there might
be a specific chipset from either company that the interface
manufacturer recommends, so do some research. But in general, unless
you bought a laptop that was prepared for audio, if you don't optimize
that one for audio work (and sometimes even if you do), you just won't
get the full performance. This all depends of course on what you're
planning to do in terms of audio work; if you just want to play a few
soft synths, you might be ok. If you want to run synths, realtime effects
and other plugIns all at once, you will most likely run into problems!

Hey everyone.

I did manage to change it to the asio drivers for my sound card and
it is doing a lot better. I had a couple drop outs with the first two
midi tracks but other than that it was good. Latency issue and popping
noise is resolved, but I thing you guys are right my system isn't
keeping up. I loaded the catch me if you can sample and it didn't drop
out like it was yesterday. Asfor my chipset I can i find out what i
have. Can i just google it with my lap top model numberAlso anyone
know a good chipset? Chris had mention a texas instrument chipset. Are
they expensive? I found an article that stated that a good chipset
would be the T1394. don't know what that means.

Also I haven't done a big project involving multiple synth inserts
like demention pro. . If i am having issues now, will they only be
worse? I'll probabley test it out next week because i am prety busy now.

sorry for the extremely long message
Thanks

While asio for all does provide some solution, if you have a decent
audio interface, your interface should provide native asio drivers.
Good driver support that deal directly with the interface is usually
the
best way to go.
Go to sonar's options>Audio, in the advanced tab, first make sure
that th profile (interface) you are dealing with is the one for your
interface, then go to driver type and select asio (if it's available).
Then press apply and then ok. Try restarting sonar and then take it
for a spin and see. Note that the restarting sonar is not a required
thing for sonar 8.x, but I always do it just because :) But Rui is
right, your system needs to be optimized for working with audio
applications, and with laptops problems are even more than on a
desktop, due to certain incompatibilities, and because a laptop for
the most part will just not give you the same power as a desktop,
unless you go to the upper upper end.

Hi Efren ,
If I'm not wrong, if you are using the Wave profile, it's because you
are not using ASIO drives, instead you are using WDM drives.

I've been there!
Download the, free, ASIO 4 All drive, , and you have a part of your
problems resolved. All parameters are very accessible.
Buffer size plus kernel parameters need to be all the time on top of it.
It's a bit like this, if you are recording you need to put down the
buffer size because of latency, drop outs, etc...
For mixing or mastering work, the opposite is needed, larger buffer
size, plus more quantity of kernels.

Another thing.Be aware that PC's, need to be better config to work
with
this kind of hard processment.

You need to check on MS config, some aplications that dont really
need to be working at the time that you are using Sonar. Or, check
Start Up aplications aswell. So much that you can do to improve PC's
reaction!!!

All machine, as a limit!

Good luck,

Best regards,
Rui Vilarinho

Hey guys updating you on the status of my latency issues. I went to
the options menu on sonar and clicked on audio. I clicked on the
wave profiler and then messed with the buffer size. It was at 2 and
49 percent. I managed to get it down to 10 percent which allowed me
to play a drum kit like the way i wanted to. any where from 10 to 25
percent, the response is excelent. However now i have another problem.
I am getting drop outs after i play the second midi track. I try
freezing the track with the drum kit and it would freeze everything
and prevent me from further recording. Is there a way to freeze only
one track Thanks I think i got my latency issues fixed. I still
don't know for sure.
Thanks for the assistance.

I checked on the start menu and didn't find anything new that

it to see if i can find something? To DJX. I have a sony Vaio
laptop duel core intell 5 with 4 gigs of ram, and windows seven 64
bit
professional.
However I installed the 32 bit of sonar version. Also, the project
was just a little demo to test the latency. I didn't load demention
pro or anything just the default cake walk tts. The computer seamed
to be doing good though. I think it's something to do with the
interface.
I'm about to insert the disk again to see if i can find any thing.
I even tried finding something on the search box at start.

Thanks

Hello everyone,

I just got my sound card and it is a sonar tricapture USB. The
latency level and response ok, but when i play a sequence of notes
at a rapid pace it will not play like I did. Also, I am hearing a
popping sound in the background and the sound sounds distorted. It
sounds ok when I export though. I did some research and found that
the popping sound may be due to small buffer size. Where would I
change that. Also do asio drivers come pre-installed on the
computer? If so how will I change the settings to optimize the
latency issue and sound quality?I installed the tricapture
soundcard drivers and didn;t mess with any settings.

Thanks, sorry for the long message
