There are no stupid questions, well ok, maybe a few.
Anyway, widening a band increases the number of frequencies affect by that band, or covered by that band. Narrowing causes less frequencies to be affected by the band. Usually the relative width of a band is specified in octaves, as in an octave of musical pitch. One octave higher equals double the frequency in HZ.
