Yes, that could be done.

Through the time I was writing OP, Acorn regularly warned both myself 
and ISVs in general that writing direct to the PS stream would get us 
into trouble - new developments would break everything.

When asked how we were supposed to do things which can only be done by 
writing PS direct, there was no answer.

I suppose if there had been any great motivation at the time, I would 
have tried this approach. For example someone made a great fuss about 
CMYK sprites and PS at one point, and they promptly got written direct 
to PS.

If you do write direct to the PS stream, you do need to be able to 
predict what state it is in. ISTR writing the clipping area requires 
redundant commands be issued just so that things are in a known state.
