Yes, this is really frustrating. It could have been done with 
practically zero effort 10 years ago and all applications could have 
been printing CMYK colours easily all that time.

I have heard that Cerilica once distributed a hacked PS driver that 
offered such an interface and Vantage used it to print CMYK colours to 
PostScript.

For quite some time I have been wondering why OP and ArtWorks do not 
simply inject the setcmykcolour command into PostScript themselves, in 
the same way as both apps print CMYK sprites by injecting PostScript 
code. Having a proper interface in the PS driver would be nicer of 
course and would avoid pitfalls like the PS driver being too clever 
and optimizing subsequent RGB colour changes away because the colour 
is the same as the previous RGB colour set via the official interface.
