Ah ok
Just need to continue with the story then. Got up to the point where a
storyline quest wanted to do a dungeon... didn't feel like it and just dit all
the other quests I could find :P
Will see if I have any decent progress tonight
Also need to get into that guild with you guys if possible!

You unlock the ability to make materia later on through the main quest but only
a disciple of the hand can fit it. Eg. A armourer can attach it to swords n
shit, a weaver to clothes etc.
The same goes for chocobo, as soon as the main quest allows you to join a grand
company you can do the chocobo quest.
