Hi Brent:
This matter of when CP started using script is an interesting one and has been
the subject of much discussion on a couple of these lists. I think its safe to
say that the script appeared on on rolling stock a few years before seeing use
on locomotives. I remember seeing script boxcars about 1962 or perhaps even a
bit earlier.
The first locomotives delivered new in script were the two GP30's of 1963,
first numbered 8200 and 8201, later 5000 and 5001. All subsequent locomotives
, the GP35s, C424s and SD40's came in script.
I first remember repainted script F units about early 1965 and later that year
saw my first GP9 in script.....the 8672 if I recall correctly.
I'd venture to say that if you're modelling the early 1960's, that is prior to
1962, you'd probably want to have everything in block lettering. After early
1962 I think the script would be appropriate on some freight cars.
Other opinions from fellow list readers??????

Subject: [cpsig] cp colors and lettering
Hi this is my first time post. I am an engineer for CP in Medicine Hat
with 31 years of service. I am getting into N scale railroading and
naturally have chosen CP in the very early 60's and earlier.
I am not sure if there is any model railroaders here but I was
wondering when Canadian Pacific started using script writing on the
sides of their rolling stock. I also want to paint some brass engines
in the old maroon and grey paint scheme. Is there any off the shelf
suppliers of hobby paint that would closely match these colors.
thank you
Brent
