Dan,
The battery box on the 8203 that you referred to is actually the housing
for the traction motor field shunting resistors. They were relocated on
the rebuilt units. The battery boxes are forward of the cab on both sides.
Those stack extensions you mentioned are most likely spark arrestors
which have been added to CPR GP9 and GP7 units in the last number of years.

Why, there's a shot of it on Wilco's site:

While on the subject of variations:
-8203 kept the battery box on the rear of the conductors side cab,
while almost all others had it removed:

-1693 kept her old side skirt profile:

-And a number of units retain the bracket where one of the yellow
lines on the maroon & grey scheme crossed the front most radiator grill:

-And a few of the rebuilt TH&B GP's have different style exhaust
stacks (1683 flared, 1686 boxy, 1686 extended).
I'm sure there are many more however. :)

One additional note. CP 8202 ( ex CP 8518, ex steam generator equipped)
was in a major accident VERY SHORTLY after rebuild and was retired
following the accident as the damage was too extensive to repair.
Therefore, photos. of the unit CP 8202 are REALLY RARE!
