Paul C.,
You are correct. The original chop nose units pre-date the rebuild
program started in 1980. They were not rebuilt, just repaired mostly
following accidents. Different ideas were tried as the concept of a
rebuild program was considered for the future. This explains why the
three units 8633-8635 ended up in three different paint schemes. The
units weren't re-painted, they just had the repaired area painted to
match the rest of the unit.
Besides the three units mentioned above, there were a number of other
units done. As mentioned before, some units received a pointed nose
more like an SD40 than the standard one on a GP9 with the centre flat
section. The units involved were: 8492, 8518, 8530, 8619, 8654. These
units later became 8200-8204. They were all slightly different. Some
received the pointed nose, some not. Another significant difference was
the 8530. It received a modified long hood end. to accommodate a larger
rear sandbox. The end of the long hood was flat up to just below the
headlights and number boards. As a side note, several 1500's (during
rebuild) received this modification as well including 1513, 1514, 1515,
and (I think) 1691. I don't have my notes handy right now.
Also interesting is the the very first rebuild, CP 1512, received a
totally flat end on the long hood with a single number board and dual
horizontal headlight. This was also to accommodate a larger rear
sandbox. This unit is unlike anything else that I have ever seen on a
GP9. After these small number of units were modified the idea was
dropped as the cost outweighed the benefits of this modification.
One additional note. CP 8202 ( ex CP 8518, ex steam generator equipped)
was in a major accident VERY SHORTLY after rebuild and was retired
following the accident as the damage was too extensive to repair.
Therefore, photos. of the unit CP 8202 are REALLY RARE!

Tyler et al,
She was one of the three originals chopnoses and two experiments that
were done. The original three were done for the Aylth hump. Other
than their chopnose and pacestter equipment I believe they were
otherwise straight GP9R's, 8634-8636 I think were their numbers if
memory serves. The other two were the first two that led to the
rebuild program 8530 and 8613 I think were their original numbers.

Dan, you know I never would have noticed if you didn't say anything.<mailto:danieldellunto%40yahoo.ca>>
But looking at pictures of the 8203, she's got a pointed nose.

A minor nose variation: a few of the early rebuilds received a
"pointed" nose (8203, 8204, 8633-35, maybe more).
