As for the drawings, If I could get especially get some good quality outline
drawings, that would be great. If I can find out which would be more saleable,
the G1/G2 or the G5, I could persuade him perhaps to make those, at this stage
it looks like a G5a and perhaps the b without the heater. If this is the way he
goes, I could use the drawings to retro-modify one to a 1 or 2
To call the G5b’s “without super heater” isn’t correct. They had an Elesco
exhaust steam heater. If you look at the fireman’s side of the engine there
was a large diameter pipe that followed along the running board. Exhaust steam
was routed into the pipe which pre-heated the water coming in. It worked the
same as the Worthington steam injector but it wasn’t as large and boxy.
The G5d erecting drawings should already be on the website. I’ll pull out the
remaining G5 drawings and the G1/G2 drawings and roll them so I can feed them
through the scanner. I’ll get to them over the Christmas break.
Getting a good scan out of old drawings is a trade off between effort and
results. The G2 tender drawing I did took about a dozen attempts before I got
a scan that was as at least as good as and possibly better than the original.
That would represent possibly 2 or 3 night’s worth of effort.
