The Ambroid kit is a model of a prototype "one of a kind" car. It was the
prototype of the steel eight hatch cars built, I believe, on the tail of an
order of regular wood sheathed end bunkered cars. As it was a test of the
8 hatch design, it is not improbable that the car also tried out the plug
door technology, at least when first constructed.

series 289940-289989 shows build dates in early 1939 with service dates to
1957. The list describes the cars as having steel underframes and overhead
