I had the same dilemma with Ambroid's #K-14. My kit sat in the to do
pile
for many years as I could not determine it's legitimacy. I recently checked
Ian Cranstone's CP equipment list( http://magi.com/~lamontc/cp2.html) and
series 289940-289989 shows build dates in early 1939 with service dates to
1957. The list describes the cars as having steel underframes and overhead
brine tanks. This would explain the wood body and the 8 hatches. However the
kit was supplied with a plug type door. I don't believe there was such a
combination as built (rebuilding may be the explanation). I completed the
kit but substituted standard reefer swing doors. I've not been able to find
a photo in any CP publication. Maybe some others more knowledgeable on the
subject can help.

A friend is building an old Ambroid kit # K-14 of a CP 8-hatch reefer and
he is wondering if there was such thing. The car is wood sided
with wood ends
and the assembly instruction show the road number as CP289987.
John Riddell's freight car book has shown a few wooden reefers,
but non of them
have 8-hatches. I thought that the 8-hatch type came in first the
40's and then
a wooden 8-hatch reefer would be just fantasy, unless it is a rebuild.
Maybe some one knows a bit more about this.
