Sure they did...ever watch a pirate movie with Blackbeard on the deck with
his spyglass - same time frame.
You must be out away from things as when I lived in cities such as Chicago,
Wichita, near CU IL, etc trying to get anything on any telescope was hard
due to the heat and smog along with the street lighting at night. I get a
beautiful view of the south, west and north from where I am on top of a hill
here, as well as excellent reception on the old timey antenna on a rotor
with amp - get stations up to 150 miles away clearly and occasionally if the
cloud cover is just right I get up to 200 semi-clear.
