The San Diego art is fantastic.
I promise that I am not paid by the Houston tourist association, but I would
also recommend the Menil Gallery https://www.menil.org/ & the Museum of Fine ;
Art in Houston https://www.mfah.org/ if you are ever there with time to hit the ;
natural history museum & a bit more.
I haven’t been in a few years, but I miss them.
If I am going to rep Texas museums, I should definitely mention the Museum of
Texas Tech https://www.depts.ttu.edu/museumttu/ . Entrance is donation based & ;
it has the second largest collection of NC Wyeth art in the world along with a
bunch of other cool illustration art & there is a great Postosuchus fossil.

Although I’ve been to the Houston area many times, as I have family there, I
have never been to the HMNS - next time! - however there is what i imagine must
be a similar exhibit at the Natural History museum in San Diego, which I have
been to quite a few times, where a dozen of Bill’s murals are hanging, and
where some years he’s done a lecture there in the days leading up to Comicon -
(whatever happened to that show??) - I think that’s where the work originated.
Certainly there is a lovely ‘coffee table book’ of the art, and at one point
you could buy a special edition that had a 'cut-off’ from one of the murals in
it - being a sucker for such things, i have one, embellished by a little Bill
drawing of course.
But Bill’s an eminent natural history artist in his own right, and has I know
been on several expeditions in that cause (tough life eh!) including to
Antarctica, drawing whales and the like. I suspect his most viewed work, in
fact, is his Dinosaur art at the Disney Theme parks, mostly around the
‘Dinosaur’ ride where there are some great dinosaur portraits mostly outdoors
and another huge mural in the ‘entrance halls' - I’ll dig out some pics from
trips if i can find them. In fact Bill told me that he started his art career
out of college by creating cut-out silhouettes for customers at Disneyland CA.
I love his work, own a few pieces and every year look forwards to gaping open
mouthed at what he has on display at SD, one of the booths I get to hang out at
for a while! (I even have the very rare privilege of an original portrait of me
that Bill offered to do for me a few years ago…..)
The fairly recent ‘Fantastic Worlds of William Stout’ book is a really nice
hardcover collection of his work - my stepson got it me for Xmas a couple of
years back - and the one from the Murals is called ‘Prehistoric Life Murals’,
fittingly enough, and there are some great dinosaur books of his on the shelves
alongside fantasy stuff - many of the younger generations in our family have
received dinosaur books of his, from me, for birthdays, and chanukah/christmas
whether they like it or not!! (They do - kids love dinos.)
