But Bill’s an eminent natural history artist in his own right, and has I
know been on several expeditions in that cause (tough life eh!) including
to Antarctica, drawing whales and the like. I suspect his most viewed work,
in fact, is his Dinosaur art at the Disney Theme parks, mostly around the
‘Dinosaur’ ride where there are some great dinosaur portraits mostly
outdoors and another huge mural in the ‘entrance halls' - I’ll dig out some
pics from trips if i can find them. In fact Bill told me that he started
his art career out of college by creating cut-out silhouettes for customers
at Disneyland CA. I love his work, own a few pieces and every year look
forwards to gaping open mouthed at what he has on display at SD, one of the
booths I get to hang out at for a while! (I even have the very rare
privilege of an original portrait of me that Bill offered to do for me a
few years ago…..)
The fairly recent ‘Fantastic Worlds of William Stout’ book is a really
nice hardcover collection of his work - my stepson got it me for Xmas a
couple of years back - and the one from the Murals is called ‘Prehistoric
Life Murals’, fittingly enough, and there are some great dinosaur books of
his on the shelves alongside fantasy stuff - many of the younger
generations in our family have received dinosaur books of his, from me, for
birthdays, and chanukah/christmas whether they like it or not!! (They do -
kids love dinos.)

I had no idea did work there. The HMNS has a wonderful paleontology

comic book style. I remember being at his table at a show in Austin & he
had some of those pieces & a couple were splash pages. This young guy was
looking at 2 pieces & flipped a coin to decide between them. Unfortunately
he thought they were $10 & they were $1,000. Bill said he didn’t mind that
the guy didn’t realize that they were $1,000. He just couldn’t understand
why the guy wouldn’t go $20 for the pair!
He did some beautiful pre-production work for a Warlord of Mars movie that
didn’t get made. There was a nice full painting that I loved, but couldn’t
afford.
He’s done a number of movie posters as well. He has had kind of an
amazing career. Some of his best work has been seen by tons of people who
don’t ever know his name like the massive murals of prehistoric life at the
Houston Museum of Natural Science. Other work doesn’t really get seen by
many people, but impacts many people like his work for theme parks.

Bill has spent quite a lot of time working in the film industry doing
storyboards and production design. Notably, he designed the famous “Tar
Man” in Return of the Living Dead.
