I've put Suse 8.1 on a Dell laptop at work. I'm trying to compile a recent version of OpenSsh. When I ran "./configure --with-tcp-wrappers", I got an error message: error: ***zlib missing - please install first or check config.log*** The config.log showed this error message: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-suse-linux/3.2/../../../../i486-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lz collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Querying the packages on the system, I saw that zlib-1.1.4-41 was installed. But I replaced it with a Suse 8.1 update from www.gzip.org/zlib and now I have zlib-1.1.4-112. This did not help. Same error message. I can't find this exact error message on Google, though there are similar messages where ld cannot find -l<something>. Interpolating from what I read in the newsgroup threads, "cannot find -lz" means that ld is looking for something like zlib.a or zlib.so, but these don't seem to be on the system. Sure enough, when I run "find", it cannot find them. Any thoughts from anyone on how to solve this problem?
