A good player follows the plot and helps move the story along by their character's actions and reactions. A really great player also makes behind-the-scenes suggestions to help the plot move along. And a truly spectacular player does all of the above and isn't ticked off when their suggestions are not taken as gospel. ;) To mix a few metaphors, a better-than-average player can keep themselves amused when they are not directly involved in the plot, and can also roll with the punches when the plot suddenly tangles them into it... or step up to the plate and contribute possible causes, effects, and twists. An average player writes duty logs, recapping what happened in the live sim. A better-than-average player writes personal logs and develops their character outside of the sim time. A really great player invites others to co-write with them and turns out joint logs that dovetail with the main plot, creating subplots and in-depth character pieces. What does a host want to see in a player? Someone who can participate without trying to overrun what's going on, someone who contributes and draws others into contributing, and above all... someone who can spell, punctuate, and use correct grammar. ;)
