Hi,

On Fri, 8 May 2009, Alex Whittemore wrote:

I'm not really sure if running a game server for a game that doesn't natively run on Linux is in our best interest. There are a bunch of good games that do run natively - maybe one of them would be a better choice? I'd be willing to take second (and third etc) opinions on this one.

But for the PVR thing, with enough resources and the right setup, it
can work reliably. There are many documented cases where a
Linux-based PVR works; all we have to do is read through them and
select the best. Also, the fact that we're not limited to USB ports
for connecting the USB tuner (I assume; correct me if I'm wrong,
Ryan), we can select from a wider range of tuner cards (increasing the
probability that our system will work when built). Another advantage
that we have (over my flaky [laptop + USB TV tuner] combo) is more
resources; we can probably get some funding for this from the SAO
(especially if we can somehow make this available to all of BU (not
sure if our server can handle that load though); maybe if only LUG
members can adjust the recording schedule & everyone else can watch
the recordings)).

I don't have much PVR experience - how would a LUG member interact with the LUG PVR from their dorm room? I'm familiar with the MythTV backend/frontend configuration - is this the same thing?

Ryan, do you know if this server will be installed near a cable TV
connection?

Doubtful. It would be parked in a locked server closet in PHO309. Perhaps that means the PVR idea is out unless we can find a more suitable location.

BTW, are we ever going to have that key signing party? How about a
key server? Don't know if that will help us.

The key-signing party kind of morphed into a Security Expo, and a bunch of other student groups got interested. We did a whole lot of emailing back and forth and never really got anywhere. It's a shame, really - I think everyone just had a lot on their plates and it was difficult to take the first step and look for speakers, etc. Perhaps a simple key-signing party would have been more straightforward. It would still be nice to get that Security Expo off the ground, though.

Wow. Where did you find the funding? The XKCD event?

At the beginning of the year, I had applied for a $1000 allocation from the Allocation Board specifically for a LUG server and it was granted. The XKCD allocation will be reabsorbed by the SAO.

Anyway, with that much computing power (and electrical power), seems
like a waste to let it go idle. Seems like you can run several
    virtual
    servers on it (virtual machines).

Indeed, this sounds like a wise idea. Perhaps a KVM solution would be in order?

       * Perhaps distcc in sandboxes for us Gentoo users (during
    off-peak
hours)? Might be tough to setup & secure though.

A note about distcc security here: http://distcc.samba.org/security.html though I'd have to look more in depth.

       * I've had this idea for a while, but I never set it up & didn't
have a stable enough server to do so: a network based
    anti-theft

Sounds like a practical project. Are you familiar with Adeona? http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/ I think it's the same idea, but it would be nice to have something tailored to the BU environment. Perhaps you or Alex could borrow some code from that project.

All for now,
Ryan
