[bookshare-discuss] Re: OT: John Rutter

If I'm not very badly mistaken, I and my high school chorus class have sung some of his music the last year and a half. My choir teacher is quite fond of his work, and the things that we have sung have been fairly difficult, but beautiful (when we've managed to pull them off).

Blessings,
Nicole

Dear Judy, Larry, and Booksharian Friends,

My heart skipped a beat when John Rutter's name came up on the message line.

Judy what a transcendent experience for you and your mother to work with him in person.

Larry, I collect Christmas music of most genres, too, which is how he first came to my attention.

We're so not on a bookshare topic, but it's pleasant to discover our common interests. I've thoroughly enjoyed the discussion of classical music for brass instruments and have been taking notes.

Always with love,

Lissi

His early claire college chorus recordings I thought were better. I haven't liked the most recent several cds I've bought. I haven't bought one in 3 or 4 years though. I collect Christmas music and probably have over 400 Christmas CDs of all Genres. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy s." <cherryjam@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Wow, Larry - I think the first Rutter piece we performed was in the late 80s, so you're a decade ahead of me in discovering him. smile. My mother-in-law's been lucky enough to attend Rutter's workshops at least two times that I remember. She says he's a wonderful person to work with. Actually, she and I were thrilled to find out how nice he is because both of us had some pretty bad experiences when we were playing in symphonies and ensembles with "brilliant" composers who were a pain in the butt to work with in person. smile.

John Rutter is a composer who writes primarily for the Anglican (and Episcopalian) church. His "Gloria" is a gorgeous choral piece, as is most of his music. He also directs the Cambridge Singers, a professional chamber choir that gathers primarily to produce exquisite recordings. His "Requiem" (choral with orchestra) is stunning. His arrangements of Christmas music are great, too.

For a great sampler of his work, try "The John Rutter Collection" CD - it has a nice cross of his secular and sacred works.

What is the Rutter Gloria? Is "rutter" the right word? Between some of the novels I've been reading and Bob's recent post, something comes to my mind that doesn't go with "Gloria" or the Halleluja Chorus at all. s,mile

Yeah, I agree with Elfqueen that it can be redundant as far
as the
Halijulia or however ya spell it, chorus, what is worse for
me was
when I was singing first tenor in a choir singing the
Rutter Gloria
singing "Amen" in 5 /8 time, and we did have a
full orchestra with us
doing that one, as well as the Canite Tuba by Don McKulla,
though it
was only the first movement of the Canite Tuba.

Ii do have one of his CDs, Portrait of Wynton
Marsalis, which has various
concerti, the Pachelbel Canon for 3 trumpets and
strings, Flight of the
Bumblebee. I also have a cd Virtuoso Trumper; what is
there about Flight of
the Bumblebee? that's on both cds. What I
haven't been able to find is a Cd
of Al Hirt with the Boston Pops. He plays the trumpet
with the Pops on
Trumpeter's Lullaby and with Robert Mogilnicki and
Andre Come on Buglers'
Holiday on the Leroy Anderson CD we have. I thought we
had an LP of Hirt and
the Pops, but maybe I'm misremembering.
