Well, I don't know, Ann, I learn my stuff by ear mostly, but still and all, I'd like to get song lyrics and at least hear what the tunes are supposed to sound like. I notice that when I learn a song, over the course of time, the way I sing a lyric may differ from how I heard it the first time. Prime example is a version of "Casey Jones" sung by Joe Hickerson. I learned the lyrics he used but I notice the way I sing it is more syncopated than his version. Regardless of whether you have a written lyric or not, your interpretation of what you sing is a different matter entirely. We all tend to be creative some way or other. I wouldn't worry about written lyrics per se. Reading a score of A L'ouette isn't the same as learning to sing it. We have to keep up the traditions here, you know. Of course, I'm prejudice because any folk song I ever learned, I learned by ear. By the time I was in a chorus that sang a folk song, I knew it, and only had to modify to fit the arranger. Besides, arrangers sometimes do an awful job of arranging a song, making it much more complicated and fancy than it need be. Look at what all those arrangers have done with Silent Night. They ruin it with augmented chording and blah! It's supposed to be simple, straight forward and plain, like good wheaten bread. Just my thoughts on a funny Tuesday afternoon.
