I believe that the tone of your message is not necessary, nor is it
productive. I have been using computers since 1988. I have learned to
use the Pac Mate, the Braillenote, the Braille Lite and many other
devices and software programs.
I do not fear change, nor do I believe that those who make suggestions
should be silenced. However, if a suggestion is made without regard to
logic or rationality, people have a perfect right to express their
opinions concerning such suggestions and their feasibility.
To suggest, for example, that because technology existed in 1993 that it
would be easy to implement in a device that was never designed to
function in the way that another device functions is not logical.
A calculator to me is not necessary. However, it is logical, given the
fact that the Bookport has a keyboard that could easily allow it to work
well as a calculator. All I'm saying is that no device will ever do
everything, and do it well.
I am sure that functionality will be added to the Bookport, I simply
believe that in adding functionality, we should improve what the device
currently does, and add functionality that will strengthen the machine,
rather than functionality that is simply cute.
Cell phones now browse the web, take pictures, and much much more.
However, there have been studies that show that the more unrelated
features that get added to a device, the more people tend to become
confused and overwhelmed by the array of features.

I promised I would no longer talk about features that have yet to be
implemented. And I won't. But what I will say is, have faith in APH. Let

them listen to the suggestions, let them decide which are affordable and

which are not. They, more than any of us, know what the costs in adding
a
feature are. People making suggestions should not be shushed by people
who
are terrified of change. Larry has made it clear on this list before
that
people are free to make suggestions, and while APH staff are not at
liberty to discuss these suggestions, they are read. You guys have
effectively shut me up from ever making a public suggestion for
improvement. How many other people are you going to shut up because of
your fears?
