Linda:

Try reformatting the compact flash card, or try a different card. 
Cards can cause a unit to hang up and become nonfunctional.  You may
need to also do a Reset without the card in to get it going again.

Yes, he's done that all the time.  Now the computer doesn't even
recognize 
it, and when he takes the book port out of the computer, the book port
locks 
up and he has to take the batteries out and put them back in again.
