As I said in my other response, use of ESC is not documented anywhere with regard to canceling an audio preview--I know because I looked for it just before writing my original message on this subject. I appreciate your distinguishing and explaining in detail the distinctions regarding Auto Preview and the preview window. I wish, again, that this granularity of explanation was contained in the manual. In all honesty, I use dozens of applications, each of which come with their own sets of navigation keys, so memorizing them isn't quite as simple and straightforward as you may think. I consider myself fairly experienced with the BP, specifically, and computers in general, but I still find it more efficient in many instances to TAB through a window than to try to remember shortcuts. My own ease-of-use suggestion would be to move the Preview Window to the very bottom of the transfer window so that it would be out of the TAB order, but would still be available to those who actually want to use it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "ROB MEREDITH" <rmeredith@xxxxxxx> To: <bookport@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, December 21, 2005 2:01 PM Subject: [bookport] Re: Problems with preview in latest beta There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding the preview feature of Book Port Transfer. Let me clear things up. The preview window, accessed with Alt+P, attempts to give a brief overview of the contents of a file. The window is always present, and is always activated when you move to it, regardless of how you got there. For example, if you move to the preview window while tabbing to some other control, the preview window is activated. The Allow Auto Preview checkbox in the Advanced page of the Options dialog is only used to control whether or not the preview window is triggered automatically when moving through files. This feature is on by default, and fills the window with text when possible. If an audio file is selected in the source window, a portion of the file is played. This lets you read and/or hear something about the file you have selected. If you clear the Allow Auto Preview checkbox, nothing will happen as you move through potential Book Port content. This is the purpose of this checkbox. It is not intended to make the preview window stop functioning. This has always been the case; nothing about this discussion applies to the current beta specifically. But, if this checkbox is cleared, you can still get a preview if you want one. Simply set focus to the preview window as mentioned above. An audio preview can always be canceled at any time by pressing Escape, and may be restarted from the beginning by pressing F7. Apparently, some users are accidentally winding up in the preview window while in route to some other control. My recommendation for solving this problem is to use the hotkey of the control you wish to activate, rather than tabbing through the entire window. For example, it is NEVER necessary to hit the Send button; it is only there for sighted/mouse users. So, to send a file or group of files, simply press Enter. If you want to move to the Book Port file list, simply press Alt+F. For the Options dialog, hit Alt+O. I understand that tabbing through the dialog is necessary while learning it, but regular users should have no trouble with hot keys. Rob Meredith >>> walt@xxxxxxxxxx 12/21/05 11:43AM >>> I know we've been down this road before, but it seems to be back. Even though I have Auto Preview turned off in my options because I hate having Audible books start reading if I happen to TAB over that button, they're still being previewed. Moreover, there appears to be no way to stop this except to bail out of the transfer program completely. I wonder how many users actually make use of this feature and whether we might not be better off just having it removed entirely--any comments? -- Walt Smith - Clearwater, FL walt@xxxxxxxxxx
