You can definitely charge one battery at a time with this charger. I
purchased this particular system awhile back, and have been delighted
with the batteries and charger. One thing you'll note right away: if you
initiate a charge and all contacts aren't properly in place, the cooling
fan won't start whirring. Likewise, when the fan stops, the charge is
complete. Wonderful for blind people.

once? The charger looks like it may not need two batteries in it. That
is, it
appears like each battery, when plugged into the charger, may be a complete
circuit, if you know what I mean. It's sure great being able to have a
freshly
charged battery in about 15 minutes.
