As quoted from the BC's manual.

Battery Type
This setting lets BookCourier know whether you are using
non-rechargeable or rechargeable batteries. As noted in the
Changing the Batteries section, if you are using
rechargeable batteries (either alkaline or other),
BookCourier can display unpredictable behavior when the
batteries run low or die. When this setting is set to
Rechargeable, BookCourier makes adjustments that will
circumvent any problems when the batteries run low. If you
are using non-rechargeable alkaline batteries like those
shipped with the unit, you should change this setting to
Non-rechargeable so that BookCourier can take full advantage
of the battery life. The default is Rechargeable.=20
