Back in my, "Go to Church" days, our church secretary's husband, a
talented pianist and a piano technician by trade, told me that he
tried hard to be a good Christian, but he knew in his heart of hearts
that he was actually Satan.  Not Satan possessed, but the real deal.
We talked for many hours over a period of a couple of years.  His
parents were Bible Believers of the First Order.  Every Word in the
Bible was true, and placed there by God for a Holy Purpose.  But this
young man had sinned.  He secretly smoked.  He dabbled in drugs.  He
had sex with his wife prior to marrying her, and perhaps was
suggesting that he did marry her because of the premarital sex rather
than for love.  He admitted that he really hated his parents because
they refused to hear what he had to say, and they forced him to be
something he was not.  The list is endless, but my point is that this
man could very well have taken a weapon into a church and walked about
killing everyone in sight.  Or he might have chosen a dance hall, or a
tavern, or a porn theater.  Instead, he hanged himself when he learned
that his wife, the church secretary, was screwing the minister, a
married man with children.
Our refusal to hear one another will be our undoing.  Will we learn in time?

My response is that I've read several articles which explain that the FBI
told his wife not to tell the media that he was gay because several
politicians were emphasizing the Islamist aspect and they were, therefore
following up on it. But he had, in fact, expressed sympathies with two
Muslim religious groups that are actually opposed to each other: Hezbolah
and the Islamic State, so that it seemed unlikely that religion was a
factor.

It's kind of like a person with Schizophrenia whose ideation focuses on
being Jesus Christ or some other religious theme. The illness is the issue,
and the religion is just what it feeds on. But the illness could just as
well feed on something else. If that mentally ill person kills someone,
would you blame it on religious influences or on his illness?
