Hi Sue, I can't tell if things are checked in Word 2003, so I opened an empty document and put some text in quotes. Next, I put my cursor on one of the quotes and typed the say character key three times. This is a JAWS key stroke. Here is the test. If the character number is 34, you know it is not a smart quote. Then, you can go back in and find the smart quotes entry and press the space bar to flip it back the other way. Next, erase your test text and try the test again to confirm that you now have it set. Hope that helps. Thanks. So how do I know if it is checked or unchecked? This means that, in the RTF file, they will still appear as smart quotes and not as â characters. Smart quotes and generic double quotes differ only in their ASCII values in terms of how a screen reader will announce them and output them to a Braille display, so to replace them, you'll have to do a Find/Replace in Word with ASCII values. The opening smart quote is ASCII 147, the closing is ASCII 148, and the generic one is ASCII 34; to specify ASCII or ANSI characters in the Find/Replace dialog, type a caret (^, SHIFT+6), followed by the character code. So, first perform a Find/Replace, typing ^0147 in the Find edit field and ^0034 in the Replace edit field, and Replace All; then, perform another Find/Replace, this time typing ^0148 in the Find field and again ^0034 in the Replace field. If that doesn't work for you, omit the first zero after the carets in all cases (i.e., the sequence in each edit field would then be a caret followed by a three-digit number). This should replace the smart quotes with normal ones. Incidentally, and this is just an aside, though it relates, Word, by default, is set to automatically replace normal quotes with smart quotes when you type a quote (SHIFT+APOSTROPHE). If you want to disable this specific replacement, go to Tools > AutoAutoCorrect Options in Word. You'll land on the AutoCorrect tab, so CTRL+TAB once to land on the AutoFormat As You Type tab You'll land in a list view of options. DOWN ARROW once to land on the Straight Quotes with Smart Quotes check box. Press SPACE to uncheck it, then ENTER to close the dialog/save changes. Either this Bob is making it up, or editing in rtf is totally pointless, and I might as well give up validating altogether, as I appear to be completely wasting my time. I have gotten a lot of pleasure from validating for Bookshare over the last 3 or 4 years, whatever it is, but how the hell can I fix things I can't even find? First I spend a lot of time working on a book that was a duplicate submission, and now these stupid smart quotes, whatever that is. I'm very frustrated!!!!!!
