Hi Rik,
These annotations both sound fine. The proofreader should be putting a space
between the number and the word or punctuation before for the numbered ones.
For the asterisk ones the info at the bottom of the page will need to be put in
square brackets. If you think it’s obvious where this information starts and
ends at the bottom of the page you can leave it for the proofreader to do. If
not, you might want to add in brackets yourself.
If the numbers are scanning incorrectly this does unfortunately mean that
you’ll have to double check the scan to make sure they’ve scanned correctly.
The proofreader won’t have any way of knowing if the number is wrong or what
the right number should be.
Adding “image removed” to the diagrams etc. is perfect, and rather than putting
the whole caption in brackets, you should precede the caption with the word
“caption” in square brackets. For example: [Caption] A blue whale jumps up out
of the ocean.

I have a question.
I am scanning away on a book I guess to be out of print, as it was only
available by purchase of a used copy, copyright 1967.
It is a science type of book. Psychology, and Beyond.
The book has numbered notations.
In other words, for example one would be like this ....
“ ... world’s end.”5 “
These are then referenced at the end of the book.
But there is another type of annotation.
There are sentences which are punctuated by an asterisk. Such as this for
example.
“ ... at world’s end* “
And at the bottom of the page there is an asterisk followed by a space and a
further note or reference about that statement.
So here is my questions.
How does the Bookshare copy get done up?
How do you want me the scanner to handle both of these situations.
Should there be a bracket around that asterisk at the bottom of the page?
One thing I notice that is going to be troublesome.
Sometimes the scan of those numbered footnotes, might actually OCR recognize
the wrong number! Which of course makes this a pretty laborious project.
I can use my K-1000 to read ALL punctuation, and double check everything with
the Image of the scanned book. Wow, huh?
Who knows how many print impaired in our community will have all their worldly
knowledge hanging in the balance? But then again, if we want it right, we want
it right! Right?
Finally.
There are a number of diagrams and such which are called Figure 1, Figure 2 and
so forth. Some of them will have a caption. Others will not.
I am bracketing those captions and typing image removed before the caption. Is
this okay?
