To make a long story short, because this discussion should really be on the bookshare list but I don't know how many of you partaking go there, one book I started reading, a second book in a series, caught my interet and I bought it from our used-bok store (10 cents for paperback romances). Because references were made to people and events in the first book, I took it out of the library--but the characters weren't behaving true to character, as it were. It didn't make sense. I tried a few other pages in the middle and end of the book and decided not to waste my time. I went back to book I'd bought and started it, and the characters so far are more defined and behaving and speaking true to their personalities. In the past I've found differences between an author's earlier books and later ones; in some cases the later ones are much better, but in another case she seemed to run out of steam and her characters were more stereotypical and less complex. But never before have I found differences in two books in the same series. I'd have guessed perhaps difference authors wrote under the same name, but that's apparently not the case.
