The author, Naomi Novik, is a friend of mine, so I'll be submitting
her books pretty much as soon as they come out from now on.

Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik Black Powder War by Naomi Novik
These are two in a great alternate history of the Napoleonic wars where both England and France use dragons as an airforce. The first book in the series is in the admin approval cue, but these are easy to pick up anywhere in the series.
Sunshine by Robin McKinley
This is an urban fantasy about a baker who crosses paths with a vampire. It won the 2003 World Fantasy Award, and it's a lot of fun and very smart.
