I knew who it was, of course. Small wonder that her guardian spirit watched over the White House.

I walked through the West Wing, greeted the guards at the gate, who replied, "Good Afternoon, Bishop," and walked out onto Pennsylvania Avenue, now closed to traffic. A group of protesters, for animal rights I think, were marching up and down with what I took to be little enthusiasm.

I strolled across Lafayette Park, noting that there were as yet no signs of buds on the cherry trees and up Sixteenth Street as far as I Street. Then I turned around and walked back,
