Cindy, Sorry, I should have mentioned that particular exception. Publishers often space between titles to make the title more attractive. Word allows you to gain the same visual effect but still maintain the structural integrity by indicating a different spacing between characters. However, I do close them up now, since people have said that they are annoying. I don't think changes like that are any worse than closing end-of-line hyphens or making very large print smaller. I used to try to get the print of titles and authors as close to the original as I could, but then people posted that when they get too large they can't be read, so now I downsize them.
