Hi Gerald,

Yes I knew they labeled it as a prequel, but I think that's because they painted themselves into a corner by identifying 'The Eye Of The World' as book 1 before going in the other direction ever occurred to Jordan. I think Terry Brooks did much the same with his Shannara series, only he broke them down in to trilogies keeping the Shannara label. This is of course only a personal opinion, but I would think any book containing characters from another, with the overall plot or concept being inline with the others, should be considered a part of the whole. In support of my perspective I submit an excerpt from the copyright passage for 'New Spring.'

"The Wheel of Time?" and "The Dragon Reborn?," and the
snake-wheel symbol, are trademarks of Robert Jordan.

Dave,

The reason why it's not considered part of the series by some is that it's
not numbered in the series by the publisher or the author. As I mentioned,
I've heard it referred to as a prequel book to WOT. I guess you can think
of it in terms of the Star Wars books. There's more than one series set in
that universe, and I think New Spring was intended by Jordan and Tor as a
separate series containing three books. I'd be surprised if Jordan writes
the other two now, though, because of his health. From what I've read, and
from what Lea heard when she went to one of Jordan's book signings, it
sounds like he intends to only write one more WOT book, no matter how big it
has to be to wrap things up.
