It does indeed not require a new system, but I just might get one to
celebrate!!!!! We'll call it tempered optimism for a couple of days.
Unchecking the box you mentioned of letting Windows handle the connection did
the trick. I was able to transfer a 114 meg file and another 20 meg file
without error. Now, may I ask what's the purpose of that choice?

Well there's nothing nearby that wasn't nearby when things were working.
Cordless devices are over a room away.
Wireless connection is fine with signal strength at good or better. I can be
right next to the router and will get the same file transfer problems, btw. My
internet is fine as far as I can tell, by which I mean I can go to Google,
IMDB, the NLS download page and download fine on both machines. It's when
files travel between machines and are 20 meg or better that I have problems.
XP is handling the wireless.

This is not something that requires a new system, as there do not
appear to be any defective components. Thus, u could well get a new
system & have similar problems.
Can u connect to the internet wirelessly? What is your wireless signal
strength reading? Is windows handling your wireless networking?
(control panel, network connections, wireless, properties, ctrl tab,
if windows is handling it, the box is checked).
1 thing to check is proximity of cordless phones, microwaves,
bluetooth, game stations, & other wireless devices which could
potentially cause interference.
Having said that, though, this is very complex stuff &is not well
handled by email.
