Thanks for this clarification  Madeleine  (and examples of the footnote
numbers would be useful (though perhaps Kim will  reply  to my post. Early
on I did a book with superscript numbers -- no spaces before or after  and
no asterisks It looked so nice and was fun to do, even though it was a
little more work -- but didn't actually take more time than putting an
asterisk space number space  etc.   and a quick perusal of the file was
enough to let me know if they were all there -- checking for them when
they're regular font,  is more  difficult, evenwith an asterisk -- thogh I
suppose a search for an asterisk would work)
