I think you misunderstand. There is not one, but multiple catalog entries at the beginning of each chapter. There are no blank lines between the catalog entries. However, the catalog entries as a group are separated from the beginning of the text of the chapter. And now that you mention it, I suppose it would be a good idea to treat the catalog entries as a quote. In fact, that is what they are. They are quoted from a Sears catalog from the nineteenth century, some year in the 1890s I think. Somehow I had it in my mind that they were equivalent to a chapter title.

Wow! My first inclination was to say treat the catalog entries like a quote at the beginning of a chapter. In that case, there is usually a blank line between the quote and the beginning of the chapter, so like any change in focus, an asterisk or three should separate the quote and the chapter text. No asterisks between chapter title and quote, though. But if there isn't even a blank line between the catalog entry and the rest of the story text, I don't know what to suggest. If one follows the "keep it as close to the original text as possible philosophy" then nothing should be added. Asterisks are sometimes added to substitute for blank lines that show where a break in focus occurs, but the bookshare conversion tools remove blank lines so the asterisks are needed as a substitute. If there is no blank line or other indicator in the original... then add nothing odd as it sounds, seems appropriate.

I don't think you need asterisks. I think it's pretty clear where the entry
ends and the text of the chapter begins. Just my two cents.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Catalog Entries at Beginning of Chapters

Hi-

I am currently proofing a book that contains a catalog entry at the
beginning of each chapter. It is directly under the chapter heading and on
the same page as the text. Would you separate these entries somehow, such as
with asterisks before and after, or leave them as is? Here is one example:

Chapter 1

HAMMOCKS

No. 82155. Hammocks, close woven body, cotton weave, in bright fancy colors,
mostly red mixed with other bright colors, wide balance on each side, with
pillow, 42x84 inch, heavy and strong.
Each... $3.75.

It was one of those hot, leaden, overcast days, typical of northeast Ohio,
that made Clare Bower feel as if she were inside a big steel bowl instead of
outdoors ...

Thanks for any input,
