Hi Devin, and welcome to proofing!
So... the title page. First, the title page is not necessarily the first page
in the file. The first page may have the title on it, but if it doesn't have
the author and (in most cases) the publisher, it's not the title page.
Once you've established which page is the title page you should format the
title in 20 points and make it bold. All other text on the title page should be
12 points and not bolded.
The asterisks you're seeing in the manual are just showing you where the
example page begins and ends--you don't want these asterisks in your file.
The only other asterisk in the example is replacing a bullet that may have
appeared between the two cities where the publisher is located. All bullets in
your file need to be replaced with asterisks.
The other important bit of information you'll want as a proofer is the contact
information for the scanner of the book. If you don't know how to find that
please ask here. The scanner may be the best person to ask about text problems
in your file.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Starting out, first proofread!
Hi all. I'm so sorry it's taken so long to get started with this. I wanted to
start on this when I knew I could do well, with the tech I have. Now that I
have a Windows laptop, with LibreOffice and NVDA, I think I ma be able to do
better than on Linux or Mac. so, I checked out my first book, which should be
an interesting read. Now, what should I do to the title? I've bolded it, and
put an asterisk at the beginning of the file as the tutorial page for title
pages seems to suggest, but the asterisk page says that it should only be used
for big breaks in text, or bullets. Any ideas?
