Openbook isn't so hot for handling photos. That said, I have found that darkening the page in the contrast settings sometimes helps. It can also help bunches and bunches if you turn on color scanning, turn on the despeckle setting, and set the DPI to 400. The DPI setting seems to be the most important of these. Please be aware that this will slow down your scans a bit.
