I've always used 4:1 as well. And my fiance's grandma suggests 4:1.

In the Outdoors Notebook column in the CJ today, state bird biologist Kate
Heyden suggested a 3:1 water/sugar ratio for feeding hummers. We have always
read that 4:1 was the appropriate ratio and have used it quite successfully.
Is 3:1 better?
