The Ky Ornithological Society will be publishing an update to the Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Kentucky (AC) this fall. One issue to resolve is what type of binding to use for the book. It looks like it will be a 6"x9" size and about 225 pages in length. I am soliciting opinions on what type of binding would work best for this kind of resource book, one that many folks will put thru alot of use. There are basically three options available as described below. I would appreciate replies to brainard.palmer-ball@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx on any experiences you have had with book bindings and what you might think would be best suited for the AC. 1) what is called "perfect" binding; no stitching, but just glue between a heavy stock cover and the edge of the pages (many books are bound this way, but can crack and pages break out under heavy use). 2) plastic covered wire spiral binding; inside edge of pages are punched and a continuous spiral binding is strung through the holes. Up side here is book can be laid open flat, but I'm not sure if pages are prone to ripping out under heavy use??? Looking for experiences. 3) what is called "double wire" sort of spiral binding. Many books like Finding Guides are going to this type of binding. Inside edge of pages are punched, but paired metal rings are strung through the holes. The same up and down sides as plastic ring spiral binding, but there may be some advantage or disadvantage? Again, looking for experiences with these under moderate to frequent use. Thanks in advance for any input anyone is willing to offer in assisting the KOS Board in making a decision about this. bpb, Louisville brainard.palmer-ball@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
