****************************************************** I'm beginning to think that somewhere along the line, Messier's original idea of recording faux comets evolved into Ooh I have a neat list of odd things in the sky. Note his next object he tossed in so he could publish the first part of his list: M45, the Pleiades. ****************************************************** Could be, the ones preceding this are M42/43, which are also a "naked eye" comet. The ones that do not fit that pattern are M8,20 31.33 and possibly 36 and 37, which are also possible without optics. Its interesting in that 39 , 40 and 41 are all really lesser items and would be the tail end before adding 42-5. The list does not seem to be stacked WRT brightness or size or "type" or even area or RA.
