It's not really the technology, it's more the skill of the artisan. Forget mass-produced mirrors. Cave mirrors were every bit as good as anything made today. Unless you are talking about the glass material itself, which has improved, with Zerodur etc., or that it's is a bit easier these days to produce a fine mirror. Refractor lenses are another question.
