Rick and all,

Flatiron was quiet on Saturday night. =20

As Andrew mentioned, there is a newly fenced-off area about one click =
before
the site housing several large mobile storage units with "ARIZONA =
PORTABLE
TOILETS" emblazoned on the side(s). No-one approached it all evening, =
but
its appearance is not good news.

It looks like land development is imminent.

We saw no ATVers close by, but the Hassayampa river bottom was teeming =
with
the gun-toting, beer-swilling rascals. It is the first time I have seen
that.

We heard no gunfire of any kind, from any distance.

On an observational note, the light dome was monstrous, larger than I =
ever
remember. It extended to nearly the zenith--anything to the east was =
not
worth looking at.

In short, Flatiron will soon be history as a viable observing site. I =
think
it already is. SAC needs to find a new site off I-10 farther to the =
west,
hopefully along the lines of Sentinel and Cherry Rd: ~5 miles or less =
off
the freeway, and easily accessible by any type of vehicle. Eagle Eye =
almost
fits the bill, but with no cell service it is really no good for me with =
my
current family situation.

Matt =20

Lynn and I are heading out to Flatiron to check things out. We plan on
getting there early and will talk to anyone we meet.
Since it is almost certain that the people Andrew ran into were unaware =
=3D
that
astronomers were nearby, we hope that a short chat will sort things out.

Matt
