Quick Question - Would the larger DX DEC weight shaft screw into a standard
CGEM?

Like I said, I am sure I can go longer.... just haven't tried it yet.
As to the 8/3 problem (for those that "see it"....) [and not everyone
does...]
My "understanding" of that issue, is that it is a hardware issue, and would
require a "hands on repair" to fix it.
In my case, I (like apparently most others) am NOT seeing it as a
performance issue.
For that matter, cogging was not an issue either, but I did do the upgrade.

From everything I have read, AND discussion with Celestron engineering, a
pier mount with the standard CGEM will give the same weight carrying ability
as the DX. However, the ability to handle larger counterweights could be an
issue on the smaller shaft. If you are going to use it on the factory
tripod, then it is something to consider.

You should get way over 5 minutes of tracking ability David. Try to go 15
plus minutes one night. I plan to install the new MC firmware in the next
week. Hopefully the DEC Cogging issue will go away. This has caused me
significant problems in the past.

Is Celestron doing anything about the 8/3 problem?

Hi Ken...

I don't have a DX, but I do have a CGEM. Considering the only two
differences are the tripod, and the counterweight shaft (this is confirmed
and accurate), I guess I can respond to the CGEM question. Mine is PIER
mounted. See http://www.az-dahut.net . The images on that page will
show my configuration. I really am enjoying mine. Tracking is wonderful,
and I am getting good 5 min exposures. I am guessing that I can go much
longer than that, but I simply have not tried to.

There were two reported problems with the mount. You may have heard of the
8/3 issue, and also about cogging. The cogging issue has been addressed by
Celestron in the past few days/weeks, with the release of an updated motor
control board firmware update.

I think you are on the east side ?? If so, and if you want to see one up
close, give me a call.

I know there are other CGEM users on the forum. Steve Coe just bought
another one. He used to have one, but sold it. He is really excited to use a
new one again. I am sure others will chime in.

Hi Jim,

I had heard that the DX was basically the same as the CGEM, as far as the
electronics, but the tripod was larger and the Dec was a larger diameter to
carry more weight. I was hoping some had actually used the mount and could
shed some light as far as the accuracy compared to the Atlas EQG.

I believe the DX is the same mount as the CGEM but ...

- The tripod and mount interface to the Equatorial head are much larger and
supports a heaver load
- The counter weight shaft has a larger diameter and needs different weights

I have been told that the motor controlled can handle more drive torque but
it’s the same board. For me the CGEM is good enough. I purchased a tripod
spreader from Deep Space Products and added 10 pounds of weight to the
tripod.

Since no one can do any observing, lets talk about telescope mounts. Does
anyone have experience with the Celestron CGEM DX mount ? How is it as far
as pointing accuracy, polar alignment, tracking etc. I have heard that the
All Star alignment is good. I presently have an Atlas EQG , but am thinking
about a CGEM DX.
input please and thanks
