Thanks Sacha and everyone else who replied.
This must be a pretty new virus. I updated my MacAfee virus definition file
yesterday after the problem surfaced, but MacAfee VirusScan didn't pick up
the problem when I scanned the computer this morning.

It's the blaster virus.
You need to get a patch for it from the Microsoft site.
