Wonderful post David. I’ll pick these directions off and add them to my file.

Hi,
Assuming that you record the entire album as one track. If you then want to
export the audio to a number of files, one per track, then there are a couple
of ways of doing this. The Export multiple dialog allows you to export to
multiple files using either multiple tracks or labels:
https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/export_multiple.html
1. Using labels. Given some of the recent changes to Audacity, this is probably
the easiest way. You can either move the cursor to the start of each "song" and
create a point label, or select each song and create a region label. The former
is probably the the easiest.
2. Using tracks. You need to split the audio up so that each "song" is on a
separate track. As mentioned, Jim Gamage created an audio tutorial about this
some time ago. His older podcasts on Audacity are available on this page:
http://www.talking-computers.org.uk/jimonaudacity.html
and this is a direct link to the podcast that describes one method of splitting
up the track: Recording from your hifi using Audacity part 4:

Note also, that if you use labels, then as Andrew has suggested, then if you
save your work as an audacity project, then if future you can open the project
and easily move between the songs using the alt + left/right arrow keys.

I was just wondering if I could record future albums, or cassettes by pressing
spacebar at the end of track 1, say, and then immediately press shift-r before
the next track starts. I would end up with 11 or 12 or whatever tracks when I
was done. I’ll try your keystrokes. Thanks.

To clarify, are you wanting to have each album on a separate track? Pressing
shift-r with recent versions of Audacity will certainly start recording on a
fresh track. Assuming default settings, when you play back you will hear the
two or more tracks you have recorded.
Arrowing up and down will move between tracks. Pressing the Enter key on a
track will select/deselect it. For your purposes, be sure to select only one
track at a time.
Pressing shift-s on a track will solo it (press again to unsolo). Pressing
shift-u will mute a track.
You mentioned tagging. I am not sure if we are both thinking of the same
process, but I use Audacity’s labels for providing navigation between songs. I
recently did a short audio tutorial on using labels for arranging material,
which you may find useful. Here is the download link

Feel free to ask further questions. Wiser minds than mine will also have
suggestions.
Andrew

I have been ripping vinyl albums into tracks for some years now and would like
to try to break them into tracks to do some tagging. I tried tracking on the
fly by stopping the recording with space and then quickly pressing shift-r. I
got several tracks but can’t figure out how to play them individually or to
work with them. I’d appreciate some guidance on how to make an audacity project
with tracks.
