Hi Jean,

Perhaps I'll explain a bit about a couple terms first. E Q means equalization, which means adjusting the volume of different parts of the audio humans can hear. simple E Q would be on your stereo unit: two knobs to adjust the volume of the bass (lower) frequencies, and the treble (high) frequencies. Some stereo units would have what's called mid-range E Q volume knob, for frequencies between bass and treble.

Fancy E Q units can be many more than these three "bands", I have a five-band E Q on one of my tape decks, and I've heard of up to thirty one band E Q units.

New definitions now. Fade-in means starting the overall volume of audio (music, etc.) at a very low level, and raising it to a higher level. Fade-out goes in the other direction, reducing volume over time. Fade-ins tend to start at the beginning of music and movies, fade-outs tend to be at the end of music and movies.

Two glossary links which I've put into the audacity4blind website
are below. I'll look more specifically for a digital audio
glossary, thanks for asking.

Kai's Sound Handbook - A large online sound resource, including an
extensive sound glossary

Regarding writing plug-ins - some of them are very simple to write
- writing and testing could take less than fifteen minutes. Complex
sound effects are the ones which take the longest, at least for me
at this point.

Jean: Can you recommend a basic glossary of terms that might help
me out? That way, I won't appear so stupid and we can keep the
discussion on the list

David: We have all needed to ask elementary questions at the start
of learning something new, please feel free to ask away! This will
help add to the FAQ page. And I often find when someone asks what
seems like an elementary question, someone responds with
information which was new to me too. *smile*

Thanks for your thurough reply.

What I need to do first is work with the program a little more and get familiar with it. I don't want to have you write a plug-in for something until I've defined it better. I think half my problem is that I don't understand some of the digital audio concepts, I'm a journalist not a techy. Can you recommend a basic glossary of terms that might help me out?

That way, I won't appear so stupid and we can keep the discussion on the list hahahaha.
