Hi Dave. Unchecking that box made all the difference and I managed to crack it.Just one more thing, when I press r for recording when recording from an external device the play back always has Jaws saying r at the start. Is there any way I could fix this without deleting the first second or so?

My guess is that the problem is that the track is not selected. Pressing enter toggles on and off whether a track is selected, and if you press insert+up arrow to read the current object (or whatever is appropriate for your screen reader), then jaws reads select on after the name of the track if it's selected. To select some audio, you have to select one or more tracks and a time range. My guess is the reason why all the audio is deleted is because you haven't selected the track and the option in preferences to select all audio is none is selected is checked. If this is checked and if either no tracks are selected or no time range is selected or both of these then if you edit something it edits everything. In your case it's deleted everything. It's highly recommended that you uncheck this option - it's in the tracks section of preferences.
So just to summarize.1. make sure the track is selected, and the other tracks aren't if you've got more than one. 2. press spacebar to play, press [ where you want the cursor, and spacebar to stop. 3. press shift+j to select at time range from the cursor to the start of the audio in the track.
4. press delete. Now I understand the difference between labels and selections, I am still struggling to perform a task. I want to delete 2 seconds roughly at the start, but don't seem able to do this. I have tried left bracket where I want the recording to start, then Shift plus j. This seems to loose all sound. Similarly I have tried pressing p for pause where I want it to start, and Shift j again. Any advice gratefully received.
